Top Reasons Why A Bone Graft May Be Needed Before the Placement of Dental Implants

Missing teeth can do more than create unsightly gaps in your smile. They can also make you look older as the dental bone shrinks without teeth to preserve it. Fortunately, a procedure known as bone grafting can help restore the shape of your smile.

At the office of Dr. David Heering, we’re well equipped to provide the most advanced and effective bone grafting procedures, as well as perform tissue re-contouring as needed for optimal aesthetic results, treat all stages of periodontal disease, and place dental implants.

In the hands of our skilled and experienced periodontist, dental bone can be restored to its original dimensions to support your natural facial contours, repair the damage caused by periodontal disease or extractions, and facilitate the successful placement of dental implants.

In our office, we often perform bone grafts where teeth have been extracted to preserve or reestablish the volume needed for the placement of dental implants. While dental implants demonstrate a long-term success rate of well over 95%, their longevity and stability rely in large part upon the presence of adequate bone support.

In cases where there is insufficient bone height for a dental implant to replace an upper back tooth, we commonly recommend a procedure known as a “sinus lift.” During this surgical procedure, the maxillary sinus membrane is lifted and bone graft material is added between the jaw and the floor of the sinus to provide the needed depth to successfully support a dental implant.

In addition to using bone grafting for ridge preservation or augmentation to allow for dental implants, we can also perform aesthetic ridge augmentation procedures as needed to restore the natural contours of the tissues in preparation for fixed bridgework to achieve a more cosmetically pleasing result.

With advanced specialty training in all aspects of care related to the gums and the supporting bone around the teeth, we can help you maintain optimal periodontal health and place dental implants wherever needed with ultimate precision and excellent results.
